2010 - BIU Grand Prize Micrograph Competition Results.

10-13 January 2011: Postgraduate Course in Transmission Electron Microscopy

Due to to cancellations, two places are now available on this course.

The course is intended to train postgraduate students in the understanding and application of transmission electron microscopy (TEM) in the biomedical sciences. Students will be trained in methods of sample preparation, the principles and operation of the TEM and presentation of images (including electronic presentation). In addition, students will acquire the skills to analyse and present data, and be aware of the role, importance and relevance of TEM in biological research.

It is envisaged that students should supply and work on material that is relevant to their own research project. Each student attending the course will also be supplied with a booklet containing a range of tissue processing schedules, explanatory notes on the function and operation of the microscope and ancillary equipment, hazard data sheets etc.

The course fee is £100.00 for the four days.

We are delighted to announce that Ms. Patricia Goggin has been appointed to the post of Specialist Electron Microscopist to replace Nick Barnett who retired last week.

2^nd October 2010
The Biomedical Imaging Unit opens its doors from 11am - 3pm as part of the Southampton University Hospital Trust's Open Day. Visitors will be able to see, look down and control our various microscopes, learn about the diagnostic and research work we undertake and enter a competition to win a stereo microscope generously donated by Brunel Microscopes.

17^th September 2010
Nick Barnett retires from the position of senior electron microscopist in the BIU today after 42 years of continuous service at Southampton General Hospital.

Nick joined SGH direct from school and initially worked in Chemistry before moving to Pathology some 35 years ago.

All his friends and colleagues at SGH wish him a very long, happy and productive retirement.
