MSc Allergy

The University of Southampton is one of the most established medical schools in the UK. We are a thriving and ambitious, multi disciplinary School with an outstanding reputation for our combined expertise in research and teaching.

Our MSc Allergy course is designed to help health care professionals including GP's, hospital based doctors, nurses, dietitians and others in all health care sectors to gain a greater understanding of allergic diseases and to be able to translate this knowledge into their everyday practice. We aim to help our students develop a competency in allergy sufficient to educate colleagues, adult and paediatric patients and their families. We are teaching allergy in a non-organ based system which suits the allergic diseases. The course further integrates both adult and paediatric disease.

Following a recent re-design of our curriculum, we are very excited to launch our next course which starts in October 2009, and there are still places available. We find the students who have completed the course are very appreciative of it, and say it has benefitted them immensely. Our new course is endorsed by the British Society of Allergy and Clinical Immunology

Our part-time course provides flexibility to cater for the needs of a diverse range of students and enables them to study alongside their other commitments. Our programme can be tailored to fulfil their career motivations, and offers students specific planning of their programme route at the start of their studies with us. We also accommodate students on our "step on, step off" programme allowing you to start the programme and complete a Postgraduate Certificate in Allergy, a Postgraduate Diploma, or the full MSc.

The Scientific Advisory Board for the MSc Allergy is chaired by Professor Stephen Holgate, and gives guidance on current national and international issues in allergy. Using such internationally recognised experts in allergy ensures that the curriculum is constantly developing along with current advances in the discipline.

The Programme Director is Dr Judith Holloway, Lecturer in Allergy. Judith has taught on the MSc Allergy since 2000, and is delighted to be able to take the course forward as the Programme Director. Judith's research focuses on dendritic cells in allergy, in particular their interactions with epithelial cells in asthma. She has a number of research grants, and publications in journals including The Lancet, JACI and PAI.
